July, month of poppies, roses,
peonies, everything red, like
strawberries, wheelbarrows, fiery
sunsets, blushing red-haired maidens,
naïve tourists new to the beach,
delicious prawns from southern seas,
the flowers of pomegranates
that will turn into dark-red fruits
in the fall, when red mixes with
yellow, orange, crimson, or brown,
and what you called verdant turns bare—
but that is still far off to care:
let’s take our fill of greens and reds,
and of all the related scents
filling this baroque summer air.
